Presence Is Not Performance
We are often taught to perform confidence. Presence asks for the opposite — to stop performing and start inhabiting yourself.
Much of what we call confidence is a performance — a set of gestures we have learned to make so that other people feel reassured and we feel safe. It can be convincing. It is also exhausting.
Presence is not that. Presence is what remains when the performance is no longer necessary. It is the steadiness of a person who is no longer managing how they appear, because they are at home in who they are.
This is why presence cannot be faked into existence. You cannot perform your way into feeling safe. You can only build, slowly, the inner safety from which presence naturally arises.
When that safety grows, something shifts in how you show up. You speak more honestly. You listen more fully. You stop bracing. People feel it, even when they cannot name it.
